Getting sparky! The ultimate online learning activity toolkit! – Kate Lindsay (11am)

When designing online learning sometimes all it takes is a spark of an idea to develop what could be an astounding activity for our students. In this session we will create a shared open resource of ‘sparks’ – an essential toolkit for any learning technologist or learning developer!

The challenge: Our students are fully online, their tutor and the module they are enrolled in, aims to develop and extend their digital capabilities. In response to five learning outcomes, we will collaborate to post ideas for online activities to help our students be successful in their studies.

Participants will be guided through the 60 minute rapid-fire edit-a-thon by a tweetchat (KTDigital for @UCEMOnlineEd using the hashtag #GettingSparky ), with ideas posted to a Padlet board. We’ll tag activities as we go to produce a wall of ideas to a spark your own learning design conversations. More information on the activity will be posted on this blog.

Who will post the most ideas? Which ideas will receive the most ‘likes’? We’ll be asking the ALT community to reflect on all the submissions and vote for their favourite. Points mean prizes so make sure you join us!

An analysis of automatic transcription software – Work in Progress – Tharindu Liyanagunawardena (16:00)

The use of video has increased dramatically over the years with the general reduction in cost of production and distribution. Today over 300 hours of video is being uploaded to YouTube every minute. The continued advancement of technological capabilities has enabled videos to be accessed easier than ever before on a variety of devices making it an increasingly popular medium for education.

This increased use of video in education as an instructional medium can be observed especially in online courses. Captioning and/or transcripts, make these resources accessible to people with disabilities and they also help all students including international learners. However, creating transcripts/captions manually can take lot of effort, both in terms of time and money.

Given the legal obligation to create accessible content it is important that new technologies and their capabilities are explored. In this presentation, This session will discuss work in progress to assess six automatic transcription services and explore how useful the  software could be in creating learning materials.
