{"id":1158,"date":"2019-05-08T13:17:28","date_gmt":"2019-05-08T13:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/?p=1158"},"modified":"2019-05-15T15:45:31","modified_gmt":"2019-05-15T15:45:31","slug":"designjamintro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/posts\/1158","title":{"rendered":"Introducing: The UCEM Design Jam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week we hosted our first UCEM Design Jam.\u00a0 The\u00a0Jam marks the beginning of each module development phase under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucem.ac.uk\/transform-project\/\">Transform programme<\/a> and provides a hands-on, engaging and supported space for module teams to come together and design the structure of their nine-week modules.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Transform Project &amp;ndash; Design Jam 2019\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/334938875?h=717f7202f0&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"758\" height=\"426\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Design Jam&#8217;s\u00a0 activities have been adapted from a model developed at UCL Digital Education called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ucl.ac.uk\/abc-ld\/\">ABC Curriculum Design<\/a>. ABC has been used successfully in educational institutions across Europe as a quick way to (re)design programmes and modules, supporting academic teams to discuss and create storyboards of students\u2019 activities. Our revised approach supports our educational framework for fully online education and address vocational and competency-based learning. Key differences to ABC include giving more time to storyboard each module, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/learning-types\">revised set of activity types<\/a> to reflect the fully online and competency-based nature of our provision.<\/p>\n<p>During the workshop academic staff worked as a team with dedicated learning designers and media specialists to create a visual \u2018storyboard\u2019 for modules in the forthcoming development stage. \u00a0Module leaders had undertaken preparation activities prior to the event to plan their assessments, and identify specific areas that\u00a0students&#8217; find difficult\u00a0 along with any threshold concepts. With this information to hand we hit the ground running, creating storyboards that outlined the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/learning-types\">type and sequence of learning activities\u00a0<\/a>required to meet the module\u2019s learning outcomes and provide extra support for students where needed.\u00a0 We saw a number of new activities appearing in the storyboards including collaborative annotation, peer review workshops, digital diaries,\u00a0 revision boards, branching scenarios, and online role play.<\/p>\n<div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-4\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"4\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"Photographs from the first UCEM Design Jam\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>To break up the event, participants were also provided with the opportunity to plan media content such as video and interactive presentations, and participate in &#8216;assessment healthchecks&#8217;.\u00a0We also\u00a0explored some of the new tools that\u00a0we have embedded in the VLE including <a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/\">hypothes.is<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\">Padlet<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/h5p.org\/february-2019-release-note\">H5P branching\u00a0<\/a>along with their possible\u00a0applications<a href=\"https:\/\/h5p.org\/february-2019-release-note\">.<\/a> We are now working on moving the designs into reality, building the modules and the VLE, and\u00a0identifying and creating learning resources.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week we hosted our first UCEM Design Jam.\u00a0 The\u00a0Jam marks the beginning of each module development phase under the Transform programme and provides a&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":1149,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23,20],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1158"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1158"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1158\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2227,"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1158\/revisions\/2227"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1149"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1158"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1158"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1158"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
