{"id":1868,"date":"2020-11-26T12:29:06","date_gmt":"2020-11-26T12:29:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/?p=1868"},"modified":"2020-11-26T13:28:59","modified_gmt":"2020-11-26T13:28:59","slug":"accessibility-awareness-basics-webinar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/posts\/1868","title":{"rendered":"Accessibility Awareness Basics \u2013 Webinar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>Today I ran the first Accessibility Awareness: Basics webinar, first of a series of webinars intended to fill the gap left by abandoning our in person Accessibility Workshop (due to the current circumstances), with my colleague Graham North.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/photo-1481663759853-06ba61c7624a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/photo-1481663759853-06ba61c7624a-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"758\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We were pleasantly surprised to find 80 attendees in the webinar with us. It showed us how important &#8220;accessibility&#8221; is to our colleagues at UCEM.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In this short webinar I introduced what accessibility is, what it is like to be a student with disabilities (using the brilliant video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BEFgnYktC7U\">Experiences of Students with Disabilities<\/a>), changes in UK law around accessibility, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and then I presented 5 tips to create accessible content. My 5 tips were:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using heading styles<\/li>\n<li>Using alternatives for non-text content<\/li>\n<li>Colour contrast and not using colour as only means conveying information<\/li>\n<li>Accessible links<\/li>\n<li>Using built in accessibility checkers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nConsidering I had only 30 mins to cover all these content, I think I did a pretty good job. I used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AOzNV60vovI&amp;list=PLSdPtJxwr2Sjr2YxQcSMeVgbN7s2JixPi\">accessibility videos<\/a> I have created to demonstrate how screen reader users &#8220;see&#8221; content. I think this helped in showing how important it is to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AOzNV60vovI&amp;feature=youtu.be\">accessible links<\/a> because non-screen reader users do not have the insight what it is like to use a screen reader. I think in my session participants were able to experience it at least in some way.\n\u00a0\nNext session will be lead by Graham on 8th December looking at a document we have purposely created with lot of accessibility issues.
