We looked at how we can make our <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-319-49625-2_10\">digital learning materials more accessible<\/a>\u00a0and we have made our <a href=\"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/2017\/sessions\/captioning-videos-for-accessibility-a-case-study-1676\/#gref\">webinars available with captions<\/a>\u00a0using <a href=\"http:\/\/synote.com\/\">Synote<\/a> to support deaf students. This experience helped me to write a book chapter, currently under review, for the edited book <em>Ecologies of open: Inclusion, intersections, and interstices in education<\/em> with collaborators <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\/citations?user=5Z-pA9EAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Prof. Shirley Williams<\/a>, professor emerita <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/\">University of Reading<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.a-cubed.info\/home.html\">Prof. Andrew Adams<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiji.ac.jp\/cip\/english\/\">Meiji University<\/a> Japan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_395\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-395\" style=\"width: 758px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/inclusion-2731346_1920.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-395 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/inclusion-2731346_1920-1024x349.png\" alt=\"Inclusive society\" width=\"758\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/inclusion-2731346_1920-1024x349.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/inclusion-2731346_1920-300x102.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/inclusion-2731346_1920-768x262.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.ucem.ac.uk\/onlineeducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/inclusion-2731346_1920.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 758px) 100vw, 758px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inclusive society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The chapter, <em><strong>Open to Inclusion: Exploring openness for people with disabilities<\/strong><\/em>, explores the ideas of <strong><em>open\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and how they have been fluid over time and gaining prominence with technological developments but is yet to be inclusive. The chapter introduces fictitious learner personas of students with disabilities and invites the readers to explore with them the obstacles they face in accessing <strong>open resources<\/strong>, the educational materials that are made available with permission for re-use and re-purposing.\u00a0Using the authors&#8217; international experience, the chapter investigates whether the difficulties these learners encounter may differ had they happened to live elsewhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The chapter presents the case for inclusion and accessibility, including legal considerations in selected jurisdictions. While highlighting the importance of raising awareness in enabling inclusion, the chapter explores the potential of open content to create \u201cinclusive openness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The manuscript is under review and a copy can be made available if you are interested in this work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Online Learning Research Centre at UCEM has been working on accessibility and raising awareness of accessibility within the organisation.
